RIDE 2015 Information & Practical Arrangements

Duration: 6 Days
Departure to Robben Island:    Delegates can check-in from 09h00 -11h00 on Sunday 01 November 2015 at the Nelson Mandela Gateway, Cape Town Waterfront, South Africa. After an orientation session the group depart for the Island on board the 13h00 boat. 
Arrival back on the mainland: Delegates will arrive back at Cape Town Waterfront at 13h30 on the 06 November 2015.

 

General conditions on the island:
 
The weather inCape Townduring November is warm and comfortable since it is the start of summer. Delegates can expect between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. It is however windy on the island and this could sometimes cause cold weather. The boat ride can also be chilly, and it is therefore wise to have something warm at hand. More information on necessities will be given after registration.
 
 
Accommodation:

The delegates will be accommodated in the Multi-Purpose Learning Centre previously known as the convict prison. The primary mode of accommodation onRobbenIslandwill be dormitory style with up to 8 people sharing a dormitory. There are a limited number of single and twin rooms available for delegates who would not like to share accommodation. Toilet and bathroom facilities will be shared. The accommodation is simple and fits in with the context and aims of the Robben Island Diversity Experience. The prison environment definitely adds an interesting dimension and enhances the experience in significant ways. It is important to note that there are supplementary fees to the Single and Twin accommodation. 

 
Who should attend?

This program is designed for any person who has an interest in diversity and who wants to explore the deeper levels of this concept. Although the experience is based on Group Relations as practiced by institutes such as Tavistock (London) and AK Rice (USA), it is customized to provide a meaningful diversity related learning experience. Previous experience in Group Relations will be beneficial but is not a prerequisite for attending the experience.

It is however important to note that engaging in this form of learning may be emotionally challenging for some participants. It can be seen as an intense personal journey in which delegates explore their own identity, reference systems, relatedness and power relations.

Staff:

Dr Lerato Motsoaledi (MA, Clinical Psychologist) will be the director of the 2015 RIDE experience. Up to 6 consultants will be chosen to assist the director in providing learning opportunities to the delegates attending the November 2015 event. The consultants are all experts intheir respective fields and have extensive experience in Group Relations and Diversity Training /Consultation. The consultants will also be chosen to be representative in terms of race and gender.

 
Registration Fee:

The registration fee includes the full conference package as indicated below. The conference fee however differs according to the type of accommodation a delegate chooses. It is important to note that there are supplementary fees for the Single and Twin accommodation.

The conference package includes the following:

  •   Boat transfers to and from the island.
  •   The full six-day programme in studying diversity dynamics from the systems psychodynamic stance.
  •   Manual & all programme material.
  •   Accommodation for the duration of the programme (single, twin and dormitory rooms in the MPLC)
  •   All meals.
  •   Tour ofRobbenIsland, the prison and surroundings.
  •   Certificate on completion of the experience.
